EQ TLP Diary: So when do I get [fav feature] on a TLP? (Oakwynd - Updated)

A Time-locked Progression server generally starts at a specific expansion of the past and then progresses through the expansions at a set time interval that is significantly shorter than the original expansion release timeline. Additionally, each TLP has its own definitive ruleset, i.e. mechanics for the server which may or may not be the same as a Live (non-TLP) or other TLP server.

TLP servers are not "true" rollbacks to the earlier days. There are some changes from Original that are on Current that are not changed to the original on a TLP and some are changes expressly designed for TLPs. Most of these are arguable quality of life improvements for the game. Some do affect game play significantly while others are somewhat cosmetic or only affect a few.

Everquest is wholly owned by Daybreak and Fippy Darkpaw games with whom I have no fiduciary affiliation. All trademarks of the game and server are theirs.

NOTE: I may add more information or clarifications to this page in the days to come. Also, I do not claim to be an expert in anything other than being me. My information here is slanted to my own perceptions and/or biases. I might also be missing key information. If you know of things I am missing, please comment.

So when do I get [fav feature] on a TLP?

Some of the information here was gleaned from https://www.everquest.com/guides/eq-what-is-a-progression-server and various forum posts and other sources of EQ Information including various Zam pages. Zam has a similar breakdown: https://everquest.allakhazam.com/wiki/EQ:Progression_Servers#What_expansion_do_we_get_this? The significant difference is the ordering/focus. Here I order by expansion, not by feature.

These are simple lists that do not relate to each other (i.e. the first item in Original is generally not related to the first item in Current). Placement in the lists is arbitrary. There are intentionally no judgement calls, just noting when changes occur. Since every expansion has new zones and new spells/skills, unless they represent a new type of mechanic, no mention will be made here.

Original = New Feature that is as was when the game or expansion launched so will be available only when that expansion unlocks

Current = Changes to the game from what it was but related only to when that expansion unlocks.

For those items added earlier than their expansion are noted in the Current where they're added (i.e. augments in Classic vs when they originally launched with LoDN). For many "new features" in the later expansions, the feature is available at the start and so is not noted under the expansion since it is not added there.

Oakwynd

The bonuses or changes just on Oakwynd are also noted. The unlocks dates are based on the number of weeks in expansion (and might be a bit drifted - corrections later):

  • Eight weeks after launch: Ruins of Kunark
  • Eight weeks later: Scars of Velious
  • Eight weeks later: Shadows of Luclin
  • Eight weeks later: Planes of Power and Legacy of Ykesha
  • Twelve weeks later: Lost Dungeons of Norrath
  • Four weeks later: Gates of Discord
  • At this point the schedule becomes consistent. Enjoy expansions for twelve weeks when a new level cap is unlocked, and eight weeks in expansions where the level cap stays the same.

Projected unlock schedule: https://everquest.allakhazam.com/wiki/EQ:Progression_Servers_Oakwynd#Speculated_Unlock_Dates_for_Expansions

Classic

Oakwynd

  • Legacy XP bonus for max characters on the account
  • Expanded Heritage (most No Trade items will be tradeable between characters on the same account)
  • Truebox (one account logged in per computer)
  • First to Engage encounter locking

Some of this section is somewhat a rehash in different form from my first EQ TLP Diary post: How classic is Classic, but in a much more concise (and eventually more complete) format.

Original
  • Original races and classes
  • Original tradeskill recipes for enchanted jewellery
  • Original tradeskill recipes for alchemical potions
  • Boats work!
  • 1 account logged in per computer (now called "Truebox")
  • Some drops no longer available in Live
  • Max level 50
  • Level 46+ to access Planes (Sky, Hate, and Fear)
  • Night blind Humans, Barbarians, and others that don't have ultra or infravision.
  • Drop armor often has a 'size' and cannot be equipped by all races.
  • Note: The Hole and the Warrens are not open at Classic launch.

  • Inventory management
    • 16 Personal bank slots
    • 2 Shared bank slots + shared Plat slot (gold, silver, and copper are not sharable using the bank)

    • Tradeskill Depot (requires unlock for the account - ToS expansion)
    • Coin has no weight
    • Monk: weight limits increased
    • Stackable items
    • Stack sizes for many items increased to 1000 (tradeskill items mostly - sold as 100)
    • Nobles (available on the Parcel merchants)
    • Parcels (note: sending parcels is FREE, the note is not retained after the item is retrieved)
    • Note: Mixing bowls are only 4 slot / large, not 10/giant until later
  • UI-Related
    • In-game maps
    • In-game mail system
    • Many slash (/) commands added later (such as /melody, /doability, /autoskill, etc. some are added later: https://everquest.fanra.info/wiki/Useful_commands. These commands can be used in macros: https://rijacki-game.blogspot.com/2023/04/everquest-social-macros-for-novice-bard.html)
    • Advanced Loot window (https://rijacki-game.blogspot.com/2023/04/eq-looting-for-novice.html)
    • Extended Target window (level 20+ fully available, until 20 you can see the window, but it is not clickable and doesn't show you targets, but you will see a % for each attacking you)
    • Additional chat windows can opened with filters for chat types
    • UI windows, like chat, can be fade to transparent when not active
    • Hot bars, open as many as you like
    • UI changes: Raid window, tradeskill window, others
    • Achievements including Hero's Journey Quests for each starting city (you can do all the cities. Note: Some quest not available in Classic but will be later with expansion unlocks)
    • Guild ranks with settable privileges/permissions for each rank
    • Item tags for quests item and tradeskill items (note: some of the quest tags are for quests added after Classic, those are just 'vendor trash' and some sell for silver or even gold)
    • Lore information on items
    • Status icon to indicate in-combat, resting, etc.
    • Group role icons (https://rijacki-game.blogspot.com/2023/05/everquest-novice-grouping-roles-and.html)
    • Faction standings window (generally only factions you can raise/lower)
    • Keyrings added in recent expansions - each requires paid unlocks if the specific expansion wasn't purchased: Mount, Teleportation, Illusion, Familiar's, etc. (Marketplace - unlock for the account)
    • Task Overlay window (most quests until -much- later do not use tasks)
    • The ability to window out of the game
    • Bandolier (can be used in macros to quickly change weapons: https://rijacki-game.blogspot.com/2023/04/everquest-social-macros-for-novice-bard.html)

    • Agents of Change for 'raid' targets
    • Pickzones creating copies of crowded zones
    •  Teleporter on docks to bypass boats (goes to the same destinations as the boat)
    • Blue text clickies for quests (Note: some quests still require you to 'say' something to an NPC. What you say to whom will be in the quest dialog or, later, sometimes in the task step)
    • Each of the Anatonica mail delivery quests can only be done once (it is later wrapped with another quest given in the player housing neighbourhoods to get a title and, with another small quest, a 20-slot 100 weight reduction bag as a reward)
    • NPCs for quests in later expansions might be preset in the locations but won't respond until the quests expansion is opened (drop items for these quests are generally 'vendor trash' until the quests are available)
    • NPCs added after Classic that you kill for quests add in later expansions might not be present.
    • Drops for the old Research system are now 'vendor trash'.
    • Bugs are animals (this is important for druids and rangers)
  • Character and Skills/Spells
    •  2 free backpacks and Lantern (No Trade)
